OYC Takes On Mardi Gras!

On February 20th, Occupier Jennie M simply asked on the OYC Facebook Working Group Page "What are we doing for Mardi Gras?" And with that, she hosted one of OYC's most amazing Corner Occupations yet on Fat Tuesday 2012!

We had a healthy contingent of more than 20 San Diego Occupiers taking over the intersection leading into the 5th Street Entrance of the San Diego Mardi Gras Celebration! Welcoming every person coming into the event on all sides of 5th on Broadway, we took on the spirit of the night with  masks, costumes, signs, singing, chanting rotations.

Occupier Barbara brought the huge blue banner this time saying "Please Support www.occupywalk.org SD to NYC" Much love and respect to the brave 7 Occupiers walking from the Southwest Corner to the Northeast Corner of the Country! You know we sent them on their way out the state with OYL Table Tents and Lost Lindas! Thanks to Occupier Nan!

Such an amasing turnout: Occupy San Diego was represented, Anonymous was represented, Occupy Wellness was represented... special Occupy Mardi Gras Songs were sung, fun Occupy Mardi Gras Masks were made, and we even got 2 hop-ons! (Hop-ons are watching 99%er who wants to join in take part... we give them a sign and they let the world know what's up with us!)

We even had our first Occupy Corner Chanting Corner Rotation!
The amazing Photographer Johnny captured all the angles, our lovely Cowbell Mistress showed up in full Mardi regalia, and Occupier Fish was our secret chaperone.

Here's our OYC Mardi Gras song:
(To the tune of "When the saints go marching in")

"Oh when the banks come breaking in,
When the banks come breaking in,
Oh, They've come to take all your money
And then they'll take a-way your Hoooome!"

Two Weeks Of Major Corner Occupying

Over the last few weeks a variety of exciting and amazing things have been going on in the OccupYrCorner camp in San Diego!

On February 8th OccupYrCorner joined forces with the main Occupation of San Diego, the International Workers of the World, and various Labor Unions for the re-enactment SoapBox Corner Protests for the100th Anniversary of the Free Speech Fights in San Diego. One hundred years ago it was illegal to speak to others in public on the streets about opinions or political views in American cities until a series of protests, riots, and efforts in the area helped open up the restoration of the freedom of speech across the country.

We were beaming as we watched over a hundred people partake in the  wonder of Corner Occupying and speak to passer-by and pedestrians about the freedom of speech, current politics, and recent corporate piracy.

On February 11th OccupYrCorner was happy to work with Occupy San Diego, Women Occupy San Diego, OSD Wellness, Occupy LA, Occupy Encinitas, Occupy Oceanside, Occupy Vista, Occupy Chula Vista, Occupy Encinitas, Occupy 805, Occupy Fullerton, Occupy Riverside and more as we took part in the Occupy SoCal Conference in San Diego.

The day started with a secondary celebration of the Free Speech Fights at the corners of 5th and E in San Diego. We then moved to the corners across from Democratic National Convention at the San Diego Convention Center to protest the NDAA passing in January.

We rounded out the day attending a giant GA and hosting our own hour-long breakout class entitled "The Science Behind Occupying Corners". We had a full attendance as 5 seasoned Corner Occupiers took turns handling such topics with the crowd as "Why Corners?", "Hot and Cold Corners", "Letting Your Sign Do The Work",  "Legality and Corner Rotating", "Technology and QR Coding",  and "Other ways to Occupy Like A Ninja!" So very happy to share this amazing way to bring the Occupation to neighborhoods and cities anywhere. Much thanks to Occupiers Dave, Tammy, Linda, Mari, and Ken for all your amazing help with the planning, teaching, and materials.

At our latest meeting and subsequent conversations on the official OYC Facebook Group the week, we have come up with so many amazing new ideas for outreach and community building it is hard not to see that OYC has really become an definite driving force in the Occupation of San Diego and beyond.

Occupy Encinitas - Massively Occupying Corners

The Corner Occupation Concept is spreading far and wide! Check out the images and clips in the video of the amazing Corner Occupying going on in this video about Occupy Encinitas, California... it's so inspiring!

The Occupy Movement hit Encintas on October 15, 2011 and has been going strong since. There is a demonstration every Saturday at 1PM at the corner of Encinitas Blvd. and Coast Highway 101, with a GA following the demonstration. Video by Kym Bays and the music is by Tiken Jah Fakoly.
If you are anywhere near Encinitas you should get over there on a Saturday and take part in this amazing example of occupying and getting the word out! If you are far from Encinitas then BE MORE LIKE Encinitas and start a weekly Corner Occupation in your busiest metro area!
