OYC North Park Edition

This Wednesday, we had an unbelievable OYC event in the heart of North Park, on the corners at 30th and University. Occupier Jari and I made our way down at 5:00 with our giant cardboard signs. We were met soon after by Occupier Louise, who came and met us with a big smile and informed me that my sign was upside down (thanks Louise!). Occupiers Susan and Anoki followed shortly after that. Once we had reached our “quorum” of four occupiers (plus one) we started to engage the 99% of North Park.

From the very get-go, we received such a amazing positive response from cars passing by. As we waved and smiled, showing our signs about corporate greed, ditching our banks, and reaffirming that the people will no longer be ignored, cars honked with enthusiasm and our love was very much returned by the North Parkians passing by.

Occupiers Mari, Linda, Jason, and Holly tricked in through the next half hour, and our own Paul Revere of the Occupy Riders, Nexus, came down on his bicycle donning the giant orange flag with bold letters OCCUPY. Before we knew it, we had a massive crew of 11 energetic Occupiers holding down the corners for 2 hours.

Some highlights of the night:

Louise, donning the V mask, kept a funk beat going on her cowbell for a good portion of the time and brought a real nice positive energy to keep us all going strong and our feet dancing.

Occupier Susan reported that one woman drove by chanting happily… “We are the 99%! We are the 99%!”

Occupier Linda reported getting many smiles and honks!

We recruited a local man named Dwayne (or Ray?). He joined us enthusiastically with us and he even took home a “People Before Profit” sign so he can continue to Occupy Corners wherever he goes. It was awesome to see another member of the community Occupying with us!

Without the scrutiny of other officers, a patrol car passing by us let out a loud honk in support of us as we were wrapping up. Can you believe that?? I had a feeling that some of the police in this town support what we are doing J solidarity!nd waves, which I think we all experienced in high volume J

To cap it all off, a few of us at some delicious Mexican food at Ranchos, where we shared some laughs and good conversation.

All in all it was an amazing occupation. I think that was the most support and positivity I have received in any aspect of my Occupy experience thus far (and only one person flipped me off!). We will definitely be back Occupying corners in North Park soon!

OYC: In The News...

Many things are a-foot in the OccupYrCorner Camp... here's a quick update:

OYC is excited to be represented at Occupy Congress by Occupier Tammy and Occupier Johnny! Tammy is equipped with many OYC kits, chock full of info, flyers, tents, and handouts! Johnny is manning his amazing camera!

OYC was represented in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade in San Diego with 100+ San Diego Occupiers marching along Harbor Drive to many waves, cheers, chants, and claps!

We had another amazing Occupation of Corners in a different area of Chula Vista on Monday, the 16th! That's two in a row! Go OCV!
On Saturday, we had Corner Occupiers do a short Occupation near Mt. Helix. An interesting situation came up as Occupier Kenyon showed up shortly after the Occupation left (they were double-booked to Occupy elsewhere in SD) and she found herself alone. Upon review, we agreed her choice to assess her situation and choose to Occupy safely and comfortably another day was the best. This is a way to Occupy comfortably and effectively - no need out yourself in odd situations.

Reports are coming in all over of Occupy Your Lunch tents popping up everywhere!

We are planning a Corner Occupation on Wednesday in North Park, San Diego hosted by Occupier Dave, and are gearing up for a big Corner Occupation on Friday for Occupy The Courts!

We have been in contact with Occupations in Maine, Upstate New York, and Phoenix about setting up Corner Occupations on their own! This Spring, Corners will be covered across America!

In honor of all the hard work these last few months have yielded from OSD, we bring you occupiedsandiego.com... a way to keep up to date with what's going on!

OYC: Avocado and Calle Verde

Another amazing Occupation of Corners has taken place! This time at the intersection of Avocado and Calle Verde near Mt. Helix, San Diego! Four amazing Occupiers took their messages of fairness and awareness to the streets full of cars on their lunch hour.

Hosted by Occupier Norrie (above), these four informed their neighbors and fellow members of the community that they weren't taking corruption as the status quo anymore.

In Occupier Tammy's words
"We do have a lot of vehicle traffic there. Susan and I worked well together on our corner...My sign doesn't say OCCUPY. It says DEMOCRACY for SALE...with fake money on it. Susan had two signs that had OCCUPY on it. I think that's why we had the conversation with the dude who rolled down his window..VERY positive......MANY beeps! waves, thumbs ups! Not ONE negative comment! : ).."

"...The dude at first gave Susan and I two thumbs up! WOOO HOO! I gave them back to him...so he rolled down his passenger side window and said "Great job ladies!" " You have it right...Our gov't is bought and paid for! " I just smiled and I think I said THANK YOU!...."

NO, Thank YOU, Ladies!
