OccupYrCorner Meeting 2

The second OccupYrCorner meeting was a wonderful success! About 13 occupiers assembled at Downtown Johnny Brown's at the Civic Center to talk about what this idea is, what it means, how it works, and when we're doing it. Here are some points from the meeting:

Materials:

  • Hand Out - We have some initial edits, but I will be posting the copy from the handout text onto FB for us each to input on. If we can get this done by tomorrow afternoon, we will be set. A work in progress; (in the future: QR code)
  • Mini Flyers - Handed out 5 Master sheets, please copy and cut however you like
  • Business Card Info Sheet - A possible small fact card to have on hand
  • Pocket Protester Folding Signs - We discussed compiling and printing/laminating a set from everyone's particular interests. Also considering "filled-in" and "blank" versions for back, dry erase for front. The agreed sign-off for consistency is: "- Occupy" Lamination is $2
  • OccupYrCorner Kit - We did some editing, but want to complete the Kit upon us all actually getting some on the Corner experience this Friday, so everything is taken into consideration
  • Large Individual signs - please include agreed sign-off for consistency: "- Occupy"
  • Stickers and Badges - Went over well, more to come
Tools:
  • Communication Tech - We seem to be happy with GroupMe so far; in the field test this Friday. Ken is interested in implementing a CRM-like system as we grow and expand
  • Photogs - We all came to consensus that photography is crucial for marketing and documentation, but must be done National Geographic Ninja-like...unseen. Also, the photog cannot protest, but will act as liason from intersection to intersection. Smartphone usage is also suggested.
Considerations:
  • Bilingualism - Ken and Charlene brought up the importance of a Spanish version of the materials; Ken volunteered to find translations (front and back?)
  • Committee and GA process - We are part of the 99% and OccupySD movement, but do not want to complicate this individualist group practice
  • We represent an "Approachable Information Campaign for 100% Awareness"
  • Simplicity - is key
  • Spreading the word - is important
Schedule:
  • 11/9 Soft Occupation (10pm - 12pm) - Possibly Occupy sidewalks along march route if respectful
  • 11/9 Corner Occupation (12pm - 2pm) - Meet in front of Downtown Johnny Browns to discuss final plans and go out to Occupy some Corners
  • 11/9 Corner Occupation (3:30pm - 4:30pm) - After the Rally dies down let's see if we can enlist some more Corner Occupiers and Occupations
  • Third week of November - We meet and debrief about 11/11/11 (in a Library?)
  • 11/26 Buy Nothing Day - We are Occupying Corners
  • Ideal OccupYrCorner Day - A future day we all do a large-scale occupation of downtown San Diego
Thank you so much to each and every one of you for showing up, bringing friends and family, and overall just being super amazing! We're gonna open some eyes and raise some awareness!
